Shift Pattern:

  • Our working days are Monday – Friday (with one off road day) with the occasional Sunday (2 off road days in that week)
  • Sessions do not usually take place on Saturdays
  • The standard session times run from 13:00 pm hours - 19:30 pm hours, but these times can vary slightly due to venue availability and restrictions, and Sundays and Bank Holidays are always an early session
  • Your shift starts when you arrive at the team base which is normally no earlier than 10L00 am hours for a week day session or 07:00 am hours for a Sunday, and will depend on if you have extra duties to perform related to either driving or stores collection
  • On any standard day you can expect to be back to base by about 21:00 pm hours, although this can be affected by unwell donors on session, traffic issues etc
  • The paid day is 9.375 hours
  • Within your working day there is an unpaid 60 minute break, which works out as 30 mins at 12:00 pm and 30 mins at 16:00 hours
  • The staff roster is prepared 4-6 weeks in advance by the Donor Carer Supervisor based on the needs of the session
  • There is an opportunity for staff to request certain days off according to their contract, but these are not always guaranteed
  • It is advisable that you discuss any long standing commitments at your interview
  • On commencement of your new role, you should discuss any changes to your commitment to working days with the Senior Sister to determinne if these changes can be accomodated in the roster
  • The employment contracts operate across a fortnight, so for example a donor carer working 4 days each fortnight could work 3 days in one week and 1 on the next, but this is driven by operational need
  • The rosters are published at least 4 weeks before they start, so any requests for annual leave or time off must be made before the rosters are published to allow for time for this to be considered by the Senior Sister

Duties:

  • The role of the session nurse is a leadership role, to keep staff engaged and motivated and to keep session flowing
  • Answer any queries that are reffered by the donor carers and the nurse will assess the eligibility for the donor being able to donate
  • Deal with any unwell donors on session or any issues that arise with venepuncture

Requirements of the Session Sister:

  • Must have a degree/equivalent within Nursing (RGN qualified) and an active NMC Registration (Adult)
  • Recent UK nursing experience
