Location: Reading. You may on occasions be asked to support other bases, with prior notice.

Banding/Grade: Band 6

Pay rate (Assignment rate): £25.23 per hour

Contract Length: 3-Months

Shift Pattern: You will also be required to participate in a shift working rota which may include evening, weekend, or public holiday working to cover a 7 day rota. Roster will be provided at least 4 weeks in advance.

Duties:

  • Lead the day-to-day management and performance of the plasma collection team to efficiently and safely deliver sufficient plasma to meet collection programme’s needs in line with regulatory clinical requirements and operational performance standards
  • Collection of plasma but on occasion you may be required to support on the collection of blood and other blood products
  • Ensure that a great donor experience is at the heart of everything that you and the team do, building donor loyalty and retention
  • Ensure that the plasma product safely meets the requirements of Good Manufacturing Practice ready for onward distribution to our manufacturing site ensuring the team follow instruction on clinical and standard operational procedures
  • Be expert in donor eligibility and clinical decisions, overseeing and guiding the team through all aspects of collection process and donation journey
  • Manage, investigate, and escalate where appropriate: risk, adverse events, and safety incidents
  • Be an innovative and credible role model, able to drive change to improve service delivery, safety, efficiency through inspirational, effective leadership and performance management ensuring the team follow instruction on clinical and standard operational procedures
  • Demonstrate new procedures to your colleagues when required, assessing your own and colleague’s performance providing professional and constructive feedback to ensure a team that excels in its skills and behaviours
  • Role model desired behaviours to create a culture of inclusivity, listening and respect for yourself and your colleagues
  • Deputise for the Plasma Operation Manager and support neighbouring teams as required
  • Network with nursing colleagues within NHSBT and external to build robust relationships to enable exploration of best practice
  • Actively listen to feedback from donors, immediate and wider teams to continuously reflect and build own and teams’ skills
  • Ensure that donors and colleagues understand key elements of donation, using tact and diplomacy when discussing complex or sensitive issues, including investigation of donor complaints and team member performance
  • Be responsible for the safe practice of all team members and where risk is identified make decisions and take actions to mitigate the risk
  • Adopt a root cause analysis approach to address poor practice, service delivery or care standards, identify and implement corrective and preventative action
  • Effectively plan and use non-donor facing time to contribute to the wider area and regional nursing function, including participating in staff health and corporate initiatives
  • Any other duties within the general scope of the post as and when required

Requirements for the Session Nurse role:

  • Registered Nurse with current Nursing and Midwifery Council registration (which must be maintained)
  • Be a highly visible credible leader and recognisable to donors and staff, driving performance to agreed KPI’s and be the champion of safe, effective, dignified compassionate care
  • Have experience of mentoring and supporting the professional development of your colleagues
  • Show an understanding of patient safety initiatives
  • Have experience of working with Technology and be comfortable with using Microsoft Office packages
  • Show evidence of your commitment to continued learning and application in practice
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Be an effective team member who can relate and build relationships with colleagues at all levels
  • Be a great leader that can motivate others, promoting a clear sense of purpose and a positive attitude
  • Have great attention to detail and be able to follow instructions to ensure we deliver good-practice services
  • Have excellent organisation skills and be able to adapt to deliver multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment
