Job Overview:

A compelling opportunity awaits at our client's Emergency Department (ED) located within Jersey. We seek an adept, compassionate Senior ED Ward Manager to lead our nursing team. You'll oversee a dedicated team comprising Grade 5 and 4 nurses, alongside Grade 2 healthcare assistants, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality care to our patients. Reporting to the ED Lead Nurse, you'll play a pivotal role in expanding our nursing leadership within the ED. Collaborating closely with the ED clinical lead, you'll uphold safety and evidence-based practices in alignment with our strategic objectives. As the Ward Manager, you'll shoulder professional and managerial responsibilities, safeguarding the governance, quality, and safety of ED patients.

Job Purpose:

Your primary responsibility will be to lead and manage nursing services within your designated clinical area, ensuring the highest standards of patient care. Providing expert guidance to Sisters/Charge Nurses and other leaders, you'll uphold excellence in nursing practice and patient care. Additionally, you'll champion the corporate nursing agenda, contributing to the advancement of nursing practices.

Statutory Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with legislative and professional standards, fostering a culture of best practice.
  • Assess and monitor team performance, identifying training needs and devising annual training plans within budgetary constraints.
  • Manage budget allocation efficiently, fostering a culture of cost-effectiveness and staff deployment optimisation.
  • Ensure effective rostering and staffing levels aligned with service demands and staff well-being considerations.
  • Optimise patient flow and communication across disciplines, in line with government initiatives and care models.

Budgetary Responsibility:

  • Manage budgets effectively, promoting cost-efficient resource utilisation.
  • Develop a culture of value for money, encouraging flexibility in working practices.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and skill mix, prioritising staff health and well-being.
  • Foster effective communication and collaboration with community and primary care providers.

Services:

  • Enhance patient journey and optimise patient flow from admission to discharge.
  • Uphold best practices in recruitment, retention, and human resources management.
  • Establish models of clinical supervision to ensure optimal clinical practice and patient care.

Person Specification:

Qualifications:

  • Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent Level 6 qualification) in Nursing or Midwifery
  • Leadership qualification or in progress towards one
  • Demonstrated evidence of Master's level studies or working towards it

Knowledge:

  • Personal Portfolio demonstrating current knowledge of clinical, managerial, and educational aspects of contemporary nursing practice, aligned with NMC revalidation standards
  • Understanding of clinical and human factors influencing safe healthcare delivery
  • Advanced knowledge of Governance and Risk frameworks essential for ensuring safe patient care

Technical Work-Based Skills:

  • Ability to engage, motivate, and support individuals to achieve high standards
  • Maintaining composure under pressure, exhibiting initiative, and making sound decisions
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills across various media and hierarchical levels, including handling difficult and challenging situations
  • Thorough and updated knowledge of best practices and their practical application
  • Proficiency in keyboard skills and other professional practice requisites
  • Understanding and application of NMC 'The Code' and its implications for staff and self-behavior

Experience:

  • Minimum of three years at Band 7 Senior or Grade 5/6 Sister/Charge Nurse in Emergency/Acute Care settings
  • Experience in change management
  • Demonstrated post-registration experience and leadership evidence in leading multi-professional teams
  • Proven knowledge of Safeguarding and evidence of leadership in this area
  • Implementation, management, and achievement of changes in clinical practice
  • Delivery of relevant training/education programs to colleagues at all levels
  • Exposure to multi-professional environments and effective staff management in ward/area/departmental settings
