Summary:

Sanctuary Personnel is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Independent Reporting Sonographer to join our client's team. The successful candidate will perform high-quality exams and produce concise, accurate reports independently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and independently report ultrasound exams with a high standard of accuracy.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive results to clinicians and patients with empathy.
  • Tailor scan information appropriately for the recipient, requiring strong interpersonal skills.
  • Prioritise and organise clinical workload efficiently from various referral pathways.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and protocols in line with professional guidelines.
  • Perform scans across multiple specialisms including obstetric, abdominal, gynaecological, and vascular.
  • Oversee day-to-day ultrasound operations and deputise for the Superintendent Sonographer as needed.
  • Maintain and expand personal ultrasound skills through continuous professional development.
  • Participate in departmental governance, risk management, health and safety, and audit activities.
  • Educate, train, and mentor healthcare professionals and student sonographers.
  • Deliver professional education and presentations to healthcare groups.

Job Environment:

  • Service delivery in diverse clinical environments.
  • Work autonomously and as part of a team in various settings including wards, A&E, and a neighbouring hospital.
  • Interact with a range of patient presentations, including those with challenging behaviours and conditions.
  • Provide empathy and emotional support to patients and their families.
  • Exposure to unpleasant conditions and maintaining professionalism throughout.

Main Duties:

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Utilise advanced ultrasound software requiring excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate ultrasound exams based on best practices.
  • Perform, interpret, and report on scans autonomously, following departmental protocols.
  • Provide specialist advice and health education to patients and clinicians.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and ensure proper communication of patient information.
  • Modify protocols and scan parameters to optimise diagnostic information.
  • Manage own workload, ensuring timely report generation.
  • Refer patients for further investigation based on ultrasound findings.
  • Follow hospital and departmental policies and professional codes of conduct.
  • Report incidents and participate in investigations as necessary.
  • Demonstrate computer literacy and proficiency with IT systems.

Operational/Managerial Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Superintendent Sonographer in clinical aspects and service provision.
  • Independently manage appointment scheduling and workload prioritisation.
  • Contribute to financial initiatives and cost-effective resource use.
  • Promote effective multidisciplinary collaboration and communication.
  • Participate in staff performance reviews and training.
  • Develop new evidence-based practices and take the lead in specific areas.
  • Ensure patient and staff safety through risk assessment and adherence to guidelines.
  • Participate in service development and improvement activities.
  • Perform quality assurance testing and basic fault finding on equipment.
  • Report incidents in line with departmental policies.

Educational and Professional Role:

  • Act as an expert and mentor in ultrasound skills.
  • Participate in departmental audits and mandatory training.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and research activities.

Key Criteria:

Essential:

  • DCR or BSc in Diagnostic Radiography.
  • Diploma or Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound at Masters level.
  • Evidence of post-qualification study and career development.
  • HPC registration (if applicable).
  • SOR membership.
  • Experience in abdominal, small parts, obstetric ultrasound, paediatric hips, and some vascular scanning.
  • Mentoring and assessing junior staff to Masters level.
  • Demonstrable evidence of continued audit and CPD.
  • Strong leadership and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency in IT and keyboard skills.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and use initiative.

Desirable:

  • PGC or equivalent in Vascular or MSK Ultrasound.
  • Masters in Medical Imaging.
  • Experience in MSK or vascular ultrasound.
  • Experience managing others.
