Job Summary:

This role will provide support to specialist nurses in the Occupational Health field. The successful candidate will undertake various occupational health clinical activities following training, induction, and assessment, in alignment with their competency level. They will actively contribute to the development and delivery of Occupational Health Services, ensuring adherence to relevant guidelines and legislation. Collaboration with other departments within the Health & Social Care sector, such as Health and Safety and Control of Infection, will be essential for achieving corporate objectives and delivering high-quality service.

Summary of Practice Area - Occupational Health:

The Occupational Health Service provides specialist services contributing to employee health and well-being. Operating Monday - Friday, the service offers health surveillance activities and opportunities for off-site work. New staff will undergo comprehensive training, with ongoing development opportunities expected. Effective registration with the NMC and adherence to Revalidation requirements are essential.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical:

  • Autonomously manage workload within the occupational health multidisciplinary team.
  • Deliver Occupational Health Services contracts to various stakeholders, maintaining agreed service standards.
  • Screen pre-work health assessment forms and assess fitness for proposed roles according to departmental guidelines.
  • Schedule staff appointments for work-related immunisations and screenings based on job requirements and local policy.
  • Provide guidance on work-related immunisation requirements and conduct immunisation clinics.
  • Manage body fluid exposure incidents per local policy and collaborate with relevant parties to minimise risks.
  • Assist in developing and delivering health surveillance programs.
  • Contribute to policy development, research activities, and maintaining departmental supplies and equipment.

Health and Safety / Infection Control / Risk Assessment:

  • Ensure compliance with legislation and maintain a safe environment.
  • Report accidents, near misses, and ensure proper use of protective clothing and equipment.
  • Familiarise department members with emergency procedures and ensure competence in emergency actions.

Education and Training:

  • Contribute to occupational health training programs and deliver presentations.
  • Maintain professional development and portfolio, staying updated on Occupational Health and nursing issues.

Research:

  • Participate in research, audit, and clinical governance activities to improve practice and services.

Communication:

  • Maintain effective communication with clients, managers, and professionals, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and demonstrate strong communication skills.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Registered Nurse on Part 1 of NMC register.
  • Minimum 2 years post-registration experience.
  • Knowledge of current Occupational Health issues and legislation.
  • Experience in team working and people management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and undertake venepuncture.
  • Proficiency in time management and computer skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality in line with NMC Guidelines and Policy.
  • Ability to prioritise workload, provide good customer service, and hold a full valid driving license.

Knowledge:

  • Up-to-date knowledge of Occupational Health issues and research-based practice.

Desirable:

  • Qualifications related to Occupational Health or in specific areas like Spirometry, Audiometry, etc.
  • Experience in audit/research and leadership/management skills.
