Job Specific Outcomes

As an autonomous practitioner, each midwife is accountable for the care provided to service users and their babies. They are specialists in midwifery practice, capable of leading the care of low-risk service users and coordinating care for high-risk cases in collaboration with the obstetric team. Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing care in partnership with doctors and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Supporting service users and families with limited English by arranging interpreting services.
  • Offering effective leadership, supervision, and teaching to qualified and unqualified staff.
  • Performing clinical tasks and risk assessments, ensuring accurate documentation and timely escalation of concerns.
  • Adhering to relevant Health & Community Services policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines.
  • Assisting doctors with medical procedures, including instrumental and operative deliveries.
  • Providing comprehensive education, advice, and counselling to service users and their families.
  • Actively participating in the review, development, and improvement of maternity services.
  • Proactively managing risks and promoting a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrating professional behavior, respecting privacy, dignity, and confidentiality of service users.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Empathy and effective communication skills, especially during challenging situations.
  • The ability to support and counsel colleagues during difficult times.
  • Strong negotiation, motivation, persuasion, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in engaging with stakeholders at various levels.
  • A commitment to self-development and adherence to professional standards.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding principles and child protection issues.

Qualifications

  • NMC Registered Midwife
  • Midwifery Degree or equivalent
  • Basic Adult Life Support
  • Level 3 Safeguarding Qualification
  • Clinical Skills qualifications (e.g., PROMPT, BFI, cannulation & venepuncture)
  • NIPE (Newborn and Infant Physical Examination) Certification
  • Neonatal Life Support

Knowledge

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Awareness of professional responsibilities and limits of scope and authority.
  • Understanding of healthcare-associated midwifery issues and principles of confidentiality.
  • Commitment to self-development and continuous professional growth.

Technical / Work-based Skills

The ideal candidate will exhibit:

  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • A clean B1 driving licence.
  • Strong reasoning, problem-solving, and time management skills.

Experience

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Extensive experience engaging with service users and maintaining high standards of care.
  • Demonstrated clinical outcome measures for service users.
  • Experience as a student supervisor and assessor.
  • Proven post-registration experience.
