Job Summary:

We are seeking a seasoned Senior Neonatal Staff Nurse to join our dynamic team within the Neonatal Department in Guernsey. The ideal candidate will exhibit confidence and proficiency in working autonomously in the Neonatal Unit, including attending deliveries, initiating resuscitation procedures, and collaborating closely with the medical team. The role requires adeptness in providing comprehensive care to neonates across all acuity levels, at times functioning independently.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to offer guidance and support to junior staff and families. Additionally, a willingness to undergo air transfer training and engage in off-island placements is essential for this role.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Training and Education:

  • Lead in a specified area of neonatal care, fostering service development.
  • Serve as a resource and supervisor to staff within the area.
  • Mentor and supervise students and other learners.
  • Cultivate a learning-conducive environment and facilitate quality learning and assessment.
  • Maintain own professional development in education, research, clinical practice, and leadership.
  • Develop and uphold competence in additional skills pertinent to pediatric care.
  • Undergo air transfer training and participate in off-island transfers as required.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate professional accountability within the NMC Code of Conduct.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care in collaboration with families, tailoring to individual infant needs.
  • Competently assist in newborn resuscitation and stabilisation.
  • Advocate for children and families, ensuring access to appropriate information and support services.
  • Take responsibility for a defined group of patients.
  • Guide and direct staff in patient/client care.
  • Lead a team in emergency and acute situations, ensuring patient needs are met and significant others are supported.
  • Utilise information and data to identify patient problems and guide decision-making processes.
  • Promote service user involvement in care planning, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Foster effective communication with service users, multidisciplinary team members, and other involved agencies.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the Neonatal Unit.
  • Participate in the internal rotation of day and night shifts within the unit.

Leadership/Managerial:

  • Contribute to team recruitment and retention.
  • Coordinate team activities and foster clear communication channels.
  • Ensure adherence to organisational objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist in policy and procedure development and review.
  • Conduct professional development reviews with team members.
  • Support staff with performance issues and develop action plans.
  • Serve as a professional role model, promoting high standards of practice.
  • Assist with shift planning and resource allocation.
  • Promote ward safety and participate in risk management processes.
  • Attend and participate in relevant meetings.

Communication:

  • Communicate effectively with patients/clients and their significant others.
  • Foster clear communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Promote open and trusting relationships with service users and other involved agencies.
  • Manage conflicts effectively.
  • Ensure written communication meets organisational and professional standards.

Audit/Information Technology/Research Activity:

  • Initiate and undertake clinical audits to monitor and maintain practice standards.
  • Utilise critical incident reporting systems to document risks impacting patient care.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and research activities.
  • Access relevant organisational electronic information systems with appropriate training.

Key Criteria:

Essential:

  • Registered Children’s Nurse or RN Child/RGN.
  • Diploma/Degree in a related field.
  • EMB 405 or equivalent.
  • NLS provider.
  • Minimum of 2 years neonatal nursing experience.

Desirable:

  • Leadership and/or management training.
  • Assessing and mentoring qualification.
  • Evidence of child protection training.
