Salary: £93,600 per annum, plus on call

We are seeking a Lead Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join our client's esteemed Hospice Day Care Unit and Outpatient Services. 

They will hold clinical responsibility for patients admitted to the Hospice Day Care Unit and Outpatient Services, as well as providing cover for the Consultant in Palliative Medicine overseeing the Community Specialist Palliative Care Team and Hospice IPU.

Additionally, the Lead Consultant will offer leadership, support, and supervision to the medical team.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with consultant team to provide specialist palliative care primarily in the hospice Day Care Unit and Outpatients

  • Occasional palliative care reviews of hospital patients and covering the community and IPU when required

  • Provide clinical support to the wider multi-disciplinary team

  • Attend and lead decisions at the weekly Day Care Unit MDT meeting

  • Oversee safe admissions and discharges of patients to and from the Hospice in accordance with local policy

  • Participate in non-resident telephone on-call service, offering advice to in-patient and community services

  • Actively contribute to Senior Management Team meetings, promoting a multidisciplinary approach to palliative care

  • Lead the Outpatient Department at the Hospice

  • Participate in various teaching programs for medical students, doctors in training, and multi-professional teams

  • Incorporate clinical effectiveness, risk management, and audit into daily practice and service developments

  • Lead and participate in audits by the medical team, overseeing junior doctors in audit activities

  • Engage in senior management and governance meetings

Qualifications and Experience Required:

  • Qualified Medical Practitioner

  • Postgraduate higher qualification: PhD, Diploma, or Master’s degree in a relevant subject is desirable

  • Full GMC registration

  • Entry on GMC specialist register for Palliative Medicine or CCT (expected within 6 months of interview) or CESR certification

  • Membership of relevant Royal College or equivalent

  • Desirable: Accredited clinical/educational supervisor and qualified medical appraiser

  • Desirable: Advanced Communication Skills certificate/training

  • Extensive experience in palliative medicine

  • Desirable: Experience at Consultant in Palliative Medicine level

  • Excellent clinical skills

  • Proficient in leading a multidisciplinary team in a complex setting

  • Ability to supervise clinical work of consultants, trainee doctors, and other staff

  • Evidence of undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching
