Key Accountabilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with referrers, community teams, and commissioners.
  • Assess risk and develop management plans for medical and psychiatric risks.
  • Formulate initial care plans and complete the Agreement to Treatment form.
  • Conduct admissions, including initial mental and physical examinations.
  • Develop individual formulations for each patient with the team.
  • Agree on initial observation levels and care plans before the first MDT meeting.
  • Review medical history and plan treatment accordingly.
  • Ascertain current medication and commence the medication card following unit protocol.
  • Review patient blood test results in line with the refeeding blood test protocol.
  • Conduct weekly reviews, including formal assessments of mental state and capacity where appropriate.
  • Perform assessments under the Mental Health Act.
  • Manage psychiatric aspects of eating disorders and co-morbid disorders such as depression, OCD, personality disorders, and ASD.
  • Take responsibility for the physical health of patients, arrange investigations, and refer to other services as required.
  • Assess and manage physical complications of eating disorders.
  • Review the results of investigations and act accordingly.
  • Liaise with other services and agencies as needed.
  • Monitor and evaluate individual treatment plans with the MDT to ensure safe and effective practice in the best interests of the patient and their family.
  • Review care plans with the multidisciplinary team and agree on outcomes at the MDT meeting.
  • Carry out weekly risk assessments with the MDT.
  • Prescribe and monitor medication appropriately, including those beyond the usual psychiatric formulary.
  • Liaise with social care agencies, provide reports, and attend safeguarding meetings as required.
  • Complete reports for CPAs and other meetings as needed.
  • Ensure routine outcome measures are completed on admission and at timely intervals thereafter.
  • Work with managers and clinical colleagues to identify areas for improvement and implement necessary change.
  • Cross-cover for medical colleagues during absences.
  • Participate in the consultant on-call rota and ensure cover is available at all times.
  • Respond to unit requests promptly when on call.
  • Liaise with the senior nurse on call as appropriate.
  • Prescribe medication remotely when required, in accordance with unit procedures.
  • Take a lead role in discharge planning.
  • Act as Responsible Clinician for detained patients.
  • Conduct physical examinations and practical procedures as appropriate.
  • Assess patients for both inpatient and outpatient treatment.
  • Provide outpatient treatment for patients with eating disorders.
  • Offer medical reviews for patients treated by other professionals.

Support Responsibilities:

  • Arrange annual leave cover with colleagues per unit procedures.
  • Assist in overseeing educational programmes for student placements and in-house staff.
  • Contribute to in-house teaching and training events.
  • Participate in audits, service evaluations, and research as appropriate.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legal considerations and best practices in treating patients.
  • Participate in statutory and organisational appraisal and revalidation processes.
  • Engage in annual job plan reviews and required training, including Immediate Life Support.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Prepare appropriately for weekly MDT meetings, assess, review, and document decisions.
  • Make weekly clinical entries in medical notes for each patient.
  • Complete required blood request forms for each patient.
  • Prepare CPA reports for all patients.
  • Represent the organisation during inspections and reviews.

Qualifications & Experience Required:

  • Specialist registration with the General Medical Council and a licence to practise.
  • MRCPsych or equivalent.
  • Specific training and skills in psychopharmacology and the physical/nutritional complications of eating disorders.
  • High degree of self-awareness and ability to reflect on emotional responses to patients.
  • Willingness to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience in various psychotherapeutic approaches and management of refeeding in severely underweight patients.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Up-to-date with appraisals and continuous professional development.
