Hourly Rate: £34 - £45 per hour (assignment rate)

  • Nights/ Saturdays £39.50ph

Main Duties:

  • Mental Health Assessments: Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments for inmates, identifying and evaluating their mental health needs, symptoms, and risks.
  • Treatment Planning: Collaborate with the multidisciplinary mental health team to develop and implement individualized treatment plans for inmates with mental health disorders, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Crisis Intervention: Provide immediate mental health support and intervention in crisis situations, including suicide risk assessments and de-escalation techniques.
  • Medication Management: Administer and monitor psychotropic medications as prescribed by the facility's psychiatrist, while monitoring for side effects and therapeutic effectiveness.
  • Therapeutic Interventions: Deliver evidence-based therapeutic interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), group therapy, and supportive counseling, to address inmates' mental health needs.
  • Risk Assessment: Continuously assess and manage the risk of self-harm, harm to others, or deterioration of mental health conditions among inmates, taking appropriate actions to mitigate risks.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic records of mental health assessments, treatment plans, interventions, progress notes, and any other relevant documentation.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate closely with other mental health professionals, medical staff, correctional officers, and social workers to ensure coordinated and holistic care for inmates.
  • Case Management: Provide ongoing case management and support for inmates with severe mental illnesses, coordinating referrals, discharge planning, and follow-up care as needed.
  • Supportive Counseling: Offer empathetic and nonjudgmental counseling to inmates, helping them navigate their mental health challenges and develop coping strategies.
  • Psychoeducation: Conduct group sessions to educate inmates about mental health conditions, coping skills, stress management, and strategies for maintaining emotional well-being.
  • Mental Health Education: Educate correctional staff about recognizing signs of mental distress and effective communication techniques to support inmates with mental health concerns.
  • Rehabilitation Programs: Participate in rehabilitation programs designed to aid inmates in developing life skills, resilience, and a better understanding of their mental health.
  • Medication Education: Educate inmates about the medications they are prescribed, including their purpose, potential side effects, and the importance of adherence.
  • Continuing Education: Stay updated with the latest developments in mental health practices, evidence-based therapies, and correctional healthcare guidelines through ongoing training.
  • Confidentiality: Adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines when handling sensitive mental health information and communicating with other healthcare professionals.
  • Family and Community Engagement: Collaborate with inmates' families, as appropriate, to provide information, support, and education about their loved one's mental health condition.

Requirements of the Prison RMN/Nurse:

  • Relevant nursing qualification and an active NMC Registration (Mental Health)
  • Must have Prison Clearance and experience working within a prison
