Job Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated Staff Nurse - Surgical (Band 5) to join our team. In this role, you will supervise and actively contribute to the professional development of nursing staff, ensuring adherence to established procedures and policies while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

As a role model, you will be responsible for:

  • Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care programs.
  • Delivering care aligned with the current ward philosophy.
  • Acting as a ward coordinator under the direction of the nurse in charge.
  • Providing supervision to nursing staff, including clinical supervision and preceptorship.
  • Assisting new staff in completing orientation and induction programs, with ongoing support through formal appraisals and performance reviews.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Practice and Philosophy of Nursing:

  • Adhering to ward philosophy and objectives.
  • Implementing the agreed nursing model in practice.
  • Managing total patient care within your competence.
  • Supervising newly qualified and unqualified staff.
  • Ensuring effective communication within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Adhering to professional codes of conduct and locally agreed frameworks.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Facilitating junior staff and learners to complete competency programs.
  • Providing professional support to nursing staff in achieving learning objectives.
  • Maintaining and developing your own skills to promote evidence-based practice.
  • Participating in clinical supervision.

Role Development:

  • Setting professional development targets through formal appraisals.
  • Providing support in the absence of the Team Leader.
  • Supporting key members of the multidisciplinary team.

Health and Safety:

  • Safeguarding the welfare of patients, staff, and oneself.
  • Reporting accidents and incidents and adhering to safety protocols.
  • Following safe moving and handling procedures.
  • Understanding and adhering to resuscitation and infection control policies.

Key Criteria:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current first-level registration with the relevant regulatory body.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Completion of an approved mentor course.
  • Competence in intravenous drug administration.

Experience/Knowledge:

  • Experience in coordinating ward activities and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and apply evidence-based care.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
