Duties:

  • Provide quality social work services to vulnerable children, young people and their families and/or carers, based on the policy and objectives of the Children, Schools & Families department
  • Manage a Children & Families caseload involving the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of appropriate action, to ensure that appropriate resources are deployed to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, young people and their families
  • Work in partnership with other agencies (health, education, police, voluntary sector etc.) to ensure individuals and families receive a coordinated response and appropriate services in proportion to their assessed need
  • Employ a variety of evidence-based social work skills and methods in order to achieve specific objectives as agreed with service users and the Team Manager/ Assistant Team Manager
  • Undertake direct work with children, young people and their families, taking into account their wishes and feelings
  • Complete high-quality, robust assessments of need, using the Single Assessment Process including the gathering and analysis of information to inform judgements about risk of harm to children and young people
  • Prepare, in a timely fashion, statements/applications for submission to Family Courts and represent the Children, Schools & Families Service as and when required in Court in accordance with the procedures to safeguard and promote the welfare of children
  • Ensure cases are promptly and effectively closed when appropriate to do so, under the direction of management
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other operational Social Work Teams and colleagues in the council and external partners
  • Operate across a variety of Children, Schools & Families teams to gain a diverse level of knowledge and practice in line with the relevant level descriptor of the Professional Capability Framework (PCF)
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records ensuring that the client database is used appropriately and required actions are undertaken within reasonable timescales so backlogs do not accumulate
  • Prepare and maintain casework chronologies and genograms to a high standard
  • Work with children and their families and/or carers in accordance with the aims and objectives of Childcare Strategy and the principles of the public law legal framework, inc. the Children Acts 1989 and 2004, Disability Discrimination Act (2005), the Human Rights Act (1998), Data Protection Acts (1998/2003)

Requirements of the Social Worker:

  • Degree or equivalent in social work
  • Current Social Work England registration
  • Demonstrate and evidence capability against all domains of the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) which is appropriate to the relevant social work level descriptor on the PCF
  • Be knowledgeable of the Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policies and ensure that at all times the duties of the post are carried out in accordance with these policies
  • Respect the confidential nature of the work and adhere to Data Protection Acts (1998/2003) and Caldicott Principles (1998)
  • Appreciate your professional role and status as a Registered Social Worker, and act accordingly
  • Experience of working with children, young people and their families in the field of social care or other field related to social deprivation
  • Experience of providing support to staff using evidence based techniques and practice in assessing the needs of vulnerable children and their families
  • Experience of effective multi-agency working
  • Experience of carrying timely assessments of service users’ needs, using analytical and evaluative skills, in accordance with the relevant legislation, practice guidance and the service’s policies and procedures
  • Experience of formulating, implementing and reviewing in a timely fashion the agreed care plans, designed to address the assessed needs of service users and their families/carers, promoting child and family resilience and helping reduce dependence upon services
  • Willing to undertake a DBS check
  • A current valid UK driving licence and use of a car insured for work purposes
