Pay Rate: £34 - £42 per hour (assignment rate)

  • Weekdays - £34ph
  • Night/Saturdays - £38
  • Sunday/Bank Holidays - £42ph

Main Duties:

  • Clinical Assessment: Conduct comprehensive health assessments of inmates, including physical examinations, mental health evaluations, and risk assessments.
  • Health Promotion: Develop and implement health promotion programs tailored to the unique needs of the prison population, including initiatives targeting substance abuse, sexual health, and mental wellbeing.
  • Chronic Disease Management: Manage chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and HIV/AIDS through regular monitoring, medication management, and lifestyle counseling.
  • Emergency Care: Provide immediate medical care in emergency situations, including resuscitation, stabilisation of injuries, and coordination of transfer to outside medical facilities when necessary.
  • Medication Management: Oversee the administration of prescribed medications to inmates, ensuring adherence to dosage regimens, monitoring for side effects, and facilitating medication reconciliation.
  • Minor Procedures: Perform minor medical procedures within scope of practice, such as wound care, suture removal, and basic dermatological procedures.
  • Health Education: Educate inmates about their health conditions, medications, and treatment plans, empowering them to actively participate in their own healthcare.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including doctors, mental health professionals, social workers, and correctional staff to ensure comprehensive care delivery.
  • Health Records Management: Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for each inmate, documenting assessments, treatments, and follow-up care in accordance with legal and professional standards.
  • Infection Control: Implement infection control protocols to prevent the spread of communicable diseases within the prison population, including vaccination programs and outbreak management.
  • Crisis Intervention: Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques for inmates experiencing mental health crises or behavioral disturbances.
  • Health Advocacy: Advocate for the healthcare needs of inmates within the prison system, promoting equitable access to medical services and addressing systemic barriers to care.
  • Continuing Education: Pursue ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance clinical skills, stay abreast of current healthcare trends, and maintain professional licensure and certification.
  • Quality Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing the delivery of healthcare services within the prison, such as clinical audits, performance evaluations, and outcome monitoring.
  • Risk Assessment and Management: Conduct risk assessments for self-harm, suicide, and other safety concerns, implementing appropriate interventions and monitoring strategies to mitigate risk.
  • Patient Advocacy: Serve as an advocate for inmates' healthcare needs, ensuring that their rights are respected and that they receive timely and appropriate medical care in accordance with established standards of practice.

Requirements of the Prison Nurse/Non Medical Prescriber:

  • Must be registered on the NMC and must have a relevant qualification in nursing
  • Prison clearance and experience is essential
