Sanctuary Personnel, a leading recruitment company within the private and public sector has a locum role for a Band 6/7 Adult Acute/Community Speech and Language Therapist to work 37.5 hours per week, based in Guernsey.

The pay rate for this locum Adult Acute/Community Speech and Language Therapist job is £34 - £36 per hour (Assignment rate) and is an initial 3-month contract.

Duties:

  • Manage a clinical caseload and provide a high quality service to adults with speech, language, communication and/or swallowing difficulties in acute, rehabilitation, continuing care and community settings within the Bailiwick of Guernsey
  • Provide specialist speech and language input for patients with highly complex speech, language and communication difficulties and/or dysphagia resulting from neurological and medical conditions
  • Autonomously hold responsibility of your own caseload taking into account referral criteria and prioritisation
  • Manage a specialist caseload, including those with complex needs
  • Assessment, diagnosis, and therapy, planning therapy programs and discharging patients
  • Provide dysphagia advice and support, second opinions and cover for the Speech and Language Therapist in Learning Disability
  • Work alongside specialist nurses and other health and social care practitioners in the management of patients with complex needs, both neurological and medical
  • Supervise the therapy assistant and Speech and Language Therapy students if required
  • Provide formal and informal clinical education and teaching to staff (AHP, Nursing, Support Workers), GPs and the third sector
  • Maintain registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
  • Monitor, oversee and allocate incoming referrals using professional judgement and extensive highly specialist clinical knowledge and experience thereby supporting prioritisation and effective caseload management
  • Provide highly specialist advice, teaching and training to patients and/or members of the MDT within the scope of your own practice, including airway and tracheostomy management
  • Demonstrate clinical effectiveness through evidence based practice and the use of outcome measures
  • Adapt practice to meet individual patient/client circumstances including due regard for cultural and linguistic differences
  • Contribute to the development of the service through the promotion, adaptation and development of policies, procedures and guidelines using evidence-based practice
  • Take responsibility for the safe use of equipment
  • Communicate relevant medical/social information, assessment details, advice and recommendations across agencies following local and professional guidelines for sharing information and consent
  • Gather activity data accurately and regularly, ensuring the provision of such information promptly within HSC guidelines
  • Keep abreast of evidence based practice
  • Ensure good working knowledge of national and local standards, and monitor quality through participating in clinical audit work as required
  • Have due regard for your own personal safety and that of patients/clients/carers, in particular to have regard to moving and handling regulations, restraining policies and ensure the safe positioning of self and others
  • Work with infection control and health and safety guidelines in order to deal with unpleasant working conditions on a regular basis (e.g. sputum, faeces, vomit, urine, blood, halitosis and potentially infectious conditions)

Requirements of the Adult Acute/Community Speech and Language Therapist:

  • Degree or equivalent within Speech and Language Therapist
  • HCPC registered as a Therapist
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
  • Recent post qualifying experience working as a Speech and Language Therapist
  • Be able to carry out videofluroscopic examinations of swallow*, analyse and report findings to the referrer regarding implications for management and to design specialised therapeutic programmes of care, seeking support from colleague where needed
  • Lee Silverman Voice Treatment training
  • Membership of relevant Special Interest Groups (SIG)
  • Evidence of successful completion of relevant specialist short courses
