Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week

By Gemma Raw

We can hardly believe that National Apprenticeship Week (7-13 February) is now in its 15th year. That’s 15 years of marking the amazing value, impact and opportunity that each and every apprenticeship brings. The theme for this year’s festivities is ‘Building the Future: Train, Retain and Achieve’, which is exactly what we strive for here at Sanctuary.

As a big thank you to all our amazing apprentices and their mentors, we shall be celebrating on ‘Thank you Thursday’ with a few treats in the office.

What’s special about our apprenticeships?

Sanctuary is a great place to be an apprentice. As a business, we have a fantastic track-record of training apprentices to go on and have fulfilling and rewarding careers with us. Quite simply, we value the energy, ideas and work ethic that young people have to offer and make sure that they are supported to reach their full potential. Everything is geared towards helping our apprentices build the future they wish to see, through:

  • 1-2-1 mentoring from day one

  • Direct and structured on-the-job training

  • Protected time to study

  • Flexibility to work in different parts of the business

  • 1-2-1 business coaching sessions for those nearing the end of their apprenticeship

Every month, our apprentices are also invited to attend a group session where they come together to discuss new ideas, plan activities and support one another. So far, sessions have focused on:

  • How to overcome roadblocks early on in your apprenticeship

  • An open-mic Q&A with the apprenticeship provider

  • Planning a Caribbean competition for the company, including arranging prises and selecting games (we’re big on social activities at Sanctuary!)

  • Coming up with ideas to further nurture and help new starters

With COVID-19 restrictions beginning to lift, we’ve got lots of new group sessions planned, including guest speakers on financial and mortgage planning, how to build a candidate community, and so much more!

A few words from some of our current apprentices

We could talk about our apprenticeship offering all week, but the people that sum up what it is like to work and train at Sanctuary are our current apprentices.

“An apprenticeship with Sanctuary provides a great opportunity to learn a new set of skills that you can take into the workplace. Immediately, I felt part of the team and was given 1-2-1 mentoring guidance from a highly experienced recruitment consultant. I also lean on other members of the team. There’s nobody who is unwilling to help, and that’s what I like about Sanctuary. Even the directors take the time to offer their support.” - Michael Clark, Junior Recruitment Consultant

“An apprenticeship with Sanctuary is a great way to kickstart your career. It is a completely different environment from college or other forms of education. You learn new skills and gain experience while earning. My manager supports me by regularly asking me if I need help and giving me plenty of time to complete my coursework.” - Halayzjia Williams, Resourcing Assistant, Mental Health Team

“It’s a good step to take. Personally, I wanted to try something new and get myself out into the working environment. Sanctuary has been really helpful in shaping my career with 1-2-1 sessions geared to support me in my apprenticeship and develop my recruitment skills.” - Brandon Allen, Recruitment Resourcer, Allied Health

“Sanctuary supports me with my apprenticeship in lots of ways, from 1-2-1 mentoring and monthly sessions, to giving me the time to study.” - Jakub Pucula, Recruitment Resourcer, Allied Health
