Sanctuary Health has a permanent vacancy for an experienced and dedicated Senior Occupational Therapist to work within an Adult Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities Low Secure Service based in Barham, Kent. The ideal candidate will possess highly developed specialist knowledge of Occupational Therapy and be registered with the HCPC.

The salary for this permanent Senior Occupational Therapist job is £31,141.50 to £34,378.50 per annum.

Role purpose:

  • To develop and deliver an occupational therapy (OT) assessment and treatment service to patients / service users within a specified number of services.
  • To provide unit-based, occupation-focused occupational therapy to patients / service users with complex developmental disorder and mental health needs.
  • Be an active and integral member of the multidisciplinary team.
  • With other members of the multi-disciplinary team, co-ordinate clinical care for service users within the hospital.
  • To develop and implement the posts of Occupational Therapy Assistants within the service.
  • To supervise the work of the Occupational Therapy Assistants and to provide clinical supervision, as required.
  • To take on role of most senior occupational therapy practitioner in the service and liaise with senior management in relation to occupational therapy provision.

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

  • To independently manage a balanced caseload of specific occupational therapy work and any specialist interventions (e.g. anger management).
  • To use advanced clinical reasoning to assess how the patients / service user's developmental disability / mental health difficulties impact upon their occupational areas and performance.
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate occupational therapy intervention using tools and approaches underpinned by occupational therapy theories and philosophy.
  • To undertake specialist assessment of daily living skills to ascertain level of occupational performance, risk factors and level of support needs in order to aid transfer/discharge planning / community care plans.
  • To take a lead on developing the unit-based occupational therapy service and identify opportunities within this for patients / service users.
  • To independently assess the patients / service user's mental state and identify any significant risk factors and to incorporate risk management within care plans to support recovery and actively prevent relapse.
  • To contribute to risk assessments of patients / service users and facilities; and advise and/or implement strategies in relation to activity adaptation and therapeutic outcomes.
  • To promote the empowerment and education of patients / service users in relation to their health and well-being. This should focus wherever possible on social inclusion, health promotion and relapse prevention.

Requirements of the Senior Occupational Therapist:

  • Degree or equivalent within Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC registered as an Occupational Therapist
  • Recent NHS experience either pre or post qualification
  • Have a minimum BSc or recognised postgraduate diploma in Occupational Therapy
  • Be able to develop and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, visitors, carers, members of the MDT and senior professional and managerial staff
  • Have a person centred ethos, showing empathy and a desire to make a difference
  • Be able to demonstrate initiative and creativity
  • Be flexible and adaptable, well organised and able to manage time and workload effectively in line with the needs of the service
  • Have a desire to expand your professional development and support organisational change
  • Have a legal right to work in the UK
