Sanctuary Personnel, an award-winning and renowned Recruitment Agency is looking for an experienced and dedicated Prison Staff Nurse to work 40 hours per week based in St Helier, within the States of Jersey Prison Service.

The pay rate for this locum Prison Staff Nurse job is £35 per hour (Assignment rate) and is an initial 2-month contract.

The postholder will be expected to wear the current Health Care Officer uniform and work to a published shift pattern which will involve weekend and Public Holiday attendance. There is also an expectation that the postholder will undertake shared on-call duties.

Duties:

  • Work predominantly, although not exclusively, within the Healthcare Department at HM Prison, La Moye to deliver a primary healthcare service to all prisoners by providing clinical assessments and effective treatments to maintain the health and wellbeing of prisoners in accordance with the Prison (Jersey) Law 1957 as amended, the Prison Officers (Jersey) Regulations 1957 as amended and the Prison (Jersey) Rules 2007 as amended
  • Undertake prisoner assessment of care needs and develop, implement and evaluate holistic care packages
  • Ensure all procedures relating to prisoners and the security of the establishment are followed in accordance with procedures reporting any non-compliance to a Senior Officer or Unit Manager immediately
  • Promote good dynamic security by engaging with prisoners in positive dialogue and good observation and listening skills, and, supplying relevant, timely and detailed Security Information Reports (SIRs) to the Security Department
  • Perform all duties within own professional capabilities maintaining the standards expected of a registered nurse as described by the Nurse and Midwifery Council (NMC) and keep a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) log
  • Provide an immediate response to emergency medical assistance calls
  • Triage the situation, recognise and report clinical conditions and provide assessments and interventions within scope of clinical capability in accordance with clinical and security procedures
  • Undertake first reception health screening for all prisoners on arrival at HM Prison, La Moye by checking their medical history and carrying out a psychiatric, substance misuse, suicide and self-harm assessments liaising with the prisoners GP where necessary
  • Work as part of a team undertaking responsibilities as negotiated and agreed with the Unit Manager
  • Treat prisoners as individuals, respecting their privacy and dignity at all times
  • Use screening and assessment tools to enable comprehensive assessment, implementation and evaluation of individual and holistic care programmes
  • Participate in clinical audits and adhere to any action plans produced to address issues
  • Ensure the clinical safety of those in your care
  • The monitoring of those undergoing substance misuse care, making a clinical assessment of their needs, keeping accurate records and administering prescribed medication where indicated
  • Provide the medical supervision of prisoners being restrained
  • Assist the swift processing of prisoners requiring discharge or transfer to courts by ensuring they are fully prepared for discharge by collating all documentation required, ensuring Doctor’s letters are prepared and reflective of an individual’s needs, prepare and/or administer medications
  • Assess individuals for their fitness to attend external appointments
  • Supervise prisoners, keeping account of them and their whereabouts at all times and maintaining order, whilst ensuring compliance with the Prison (Jersey) Law 1957 as amended, Prison Officers (Jersey) Regulations 1957 as amended and Prison (Jersey) Rules 2007 as amended on a daily basis
  • Regularly communicate with Officers on the landings by phone and radio to enable the smooth collection and delivery of prisoners to the healthcare department ensuring prisoners do not come into contact with one another

Requirements of the Prison Staff Nurse:

  • A registered nurse with past work experience in either general nursing, mental health or has worked with people with learning difficulties
  • Experience of working within procedures and an understanding of the requirements of working in a disciplined environment is important
  • Trained in the requirements of the Code of Conduct required of staff who work at the Prison
  • Effective communication skills are essential together with the ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive and/or contentious information about prisoners, some of who may be violent, under the influence of illicit substances or have mental health or learning difficulties
  • Be non-discriminatory, should possess assertiveness, maturity, and good organisational, interpersonal, team-working and listening skills
  • The ability to cope under pressure, be firm and able to exercise authority with prisoners who are abusive or violent is essential as is being resilient
  • Be vigilant; ensuring the security and safety of themselves, prisoners and others around them, reporting accurately and promptly any suspicious activity
  • Ability to use clinical initial and secondary screening tools to allow for a full analysis of the clinical needs by self and other health professionals, leading to the planning, implementing and evaluation of interventions as required
  • Manual dexterity to perform injections, clinical observations and C.P.R is essential
  • High levels of concentration are required when performing clinical assessment, nurse led clinics and daily tasks, with frequent interruptions due to the nature of the working environment and client needs
  • The ability to perform multiple tasks and provide immediate response in emergency situations is essential
  • A flexible approach to the workload and the working environment is essential
  • An awareness of the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2005 is highly desirable
  • Keyboard skills are essential to enable use of clinical IT effectively
  • Be in good health and be physically fit as any offer of appointment will be subject to satisfactory medical clearance and a fitness test which will be repeated at least annually and the required standard, as set by HM Prison, La Moye, must be attained
  • Willing to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance, reference clearance and a satisfactory medical clearance
