Role Overview
Sanctuary Personnel is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Principal Road Safety Engineer to lead on the development and delivery of strategic road safety initiatives across the county. This is a key senior role within the Highways team, focused on reducing road casualties, improving public safety, and contributing to our long-term transport and environmental goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of road safety schemes and engineering interventions
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to a team of road safety engineers and officers
- Analyse collision and traffic data to identify high-risk areas and propose targeted improvements
- Develop business cases and feasibility studies for road safety projects
- Liaise with stakeholders including elected members, the police, schools, and community groups
- Ensure compliance with national standards, legislation, and best practices in road safety
- Manage budgets and project timelines for safety schemes
- Support education, training, and publicity campaigns in conjunction with wider road safety objectives
- Contribute to the development of policies and strategic plans for transport and road safety
Skills and Experience Required
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or working towards) preferred
- Extensive experience in road safety engineering, traffic management, or highways design
- Strong data analysis skills, particularly with collision and traffic flow data
- Proven project management experience, including budgeting and reporting
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
- Up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance, and standards (e.g., DMRB, TSRGD, LTN 1/20)
- Ability to lead and mentor staff within a multidisciplinary environment
