Role Overview
Sanctuary Personnel is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Principal Road Safety Engineer to lead on the development and delivery of strategic road safety initiatives across the county. This is a key senior role within the Highways team, focused on reducing road casualties, improving public safety, and contributing to our long-term transport and environmental goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of road safety schemes and engineering interventions
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to a team of road safety engineers and officers
  • Analyse collision and traffic data to identify high-risk areas and propose targeted improvements
  • Develop business cases and feasibility studies for road safety projects
  • Liaise with stakeholders including elected members, the police, schools, and community groups
  • Ensure compliance with national standards, legislation, and best practices in road safety
  • Manage budgets and project timelines for safety schemes
  • Support education, training, and publicity campaigns in conjunction with wider road safety objectives
  • Contribute to the development of policies and strategic plans for transport and road safety

Skills and Experience Required

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or working towards) preferred
  • Extensive experience in road safety engineering, traffic management, or highways design
  • Strong data analysis skills, particularly with collision and traffic flow data
  • Proven project management experience, including budgeting and reporting
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance, and standards (e.g., DMRB, TSRGD, LTN 1/20)
  • Ability to lead and mentor staff within a multidisciplinary environment
