Sanctuary Personnel, a leading and award winning recruitment agency is currently looking for an experienced and dedicated Band 6 Histology Biomedical Scientist to fill a full-time role (37.5 hours per week) based in Chelsea.

The pay rate for this locum Histology Biomedical Scientist job is £26 - £27 per hour (Assignment rate) and is a 3-month contract.

Duties:

  • Championing change and improvement in cancer care through research and innovation, education and leading-edge practice
  • Performing essential technical duties for the department, responsibility for specimen processing, data entry of requests, section cutting, assisting with automated immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridisation, maintenance tasks and supporting Pathologists in providing a reliable and accurate diagnostic service
  • Deputise for a Section Manager in their absence
  • Perform a wide variety of tasks within the Histopathology Department to provide support to scientific staff in the examination of biological samples
  • Specimen processing and preparation, data entry of requests, equipment maintenance and liaison with other hospital staff
  • Receipt and checking of samples against request forms
  • Assisting Pathologists in the diagnostic sampling of fresh and formalin fixed tissue
  • Ensuring cassettes are appropriately labelled
  • Assisting in the preparation of appropriately identified blocks of tissue for diagnostic work
  • Assisting in the embedding of processed tissue blocks into paraffin wax
  • Use and routine daily/ weekly maintenance of VIP’s
  • Use of microtomes to produce tissue sections from paraffin wax samples (internal and external samples)
  • Mounting tissue sections on slides
  • Accuracy in ensuring slides are appropriately labelled
  • Use of automated staining system to produce H&E staining
  • Use of manual and automated cover slipping techniques
  • Accurate data input
  • Organise and store samples, requests and other materials as directed by supervisors
  • Assist in the maintenance and supply of working stocks of reagents and consumables
  • Performance of a variety of staining techniques to identify microscopically different tissue components, microorganisms, pigments and other cellular components
  • Decontamination of laboratory working areas and equipment, as stated in SOP’s
  • Maintain a clean and tidy workspace according to H&S regulations
  • Organise and store samples, requests and other materials as directed by supervisors
  • Responsibility to inform Laboratory Management /Senior Members of Staff with regards to laboratory procedures, risk assessment, COSHH and local safety rules
  • Assist with the storage of confidential files
  • Assist in audit activity where directed by the Laboratory Management
  • Comply with Local Health and Safety regulations
  • Abide by the Pathology Code of Conduct
  • Participate within an annual performance review
  • Ensure yearly compliance with mandatory training courses (manual handling, fire training etc)
  • Assist in ensuring the department is centred on patient care and the patient pathway
  • Ensure ALL incidents are reported according to the departmental policy
  • Answer the telephone and deal with messages and enquiries
  • Work within the capabilities and responsibility of the post, seeking advice and direction where appropriate
  • Familiarise yourself with the Trust’s data protection policy which sets out its obligations under the General Data Protection Regulation and all other data protection legislation

Requirements of the Histology Biomedical Scientist:

  • HCPC registered
  • Degree in biomedical science or equivalent
  • Post qualifying experience within biomedical science
  • Attention to detail
  • Be able to work to high standards, following defined protocols and assist in the production of accurate & high quality analytical results for the diagnosis and treatment of patient
  • Be able to work within specific areas of the department, with appropriate training
  • Understanding and appropriate use of Vacuum Infiltration Processors (VIP’s)
  • Understanding of specific requirements for tissue sectioning for different tissue types, subsequent diagnostic techniques
  • Basic understanding of routine maintenance of automated H&E staining system
  • Understanding of data entry requirements for additional diagnostic requests
  • Ability to perform and have in-depth understanding of tinctorial techniques
  • Ability to use automated staining platforms
  • Able to perform and have an understanding of core Immunohistochemistry techniques
  • Potential to expand knowledge of molecular genetics
  • Demonstrate self-directed development and work practice
  • Demonstrate a positive professional attitude to the work within the laboratory and towards other members of the department
  • Be aware of the clinical implications of the service that they provide through training
  • Be aware and comply with all relevant Trust policies following adequate training
