Sanctuary Health has a permanent job vacancy for an experienced and dedicated Consultant Cellular Pathologist specialising in Pathology to work in Guernsey.

This salary for this permanent Consultant Cellular Pathologist role is £89,456 to £126,244 per annum (10 Programmed Activities per week) OR £105.573 to £147,944 per annum (12 Programmed Activities per week)

Job Summary:

  • This is a new post which has been created due to increases in the histopathology workloads and cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings workload. The suitable candidate will have wide experience in general pathology which includes skin, urology (including prostate), gynaecology, head and neck, lung, breast and gastrointestinal pathology. Retraining will be supported for a candidate who has subspecialised and wishes to revert to reporting general pathology to share the work load with the current post holder. However, if the prospective candidate has a special interest and wishes to pursue this by leading specific MDT meetings, this will be accommodated.

  • The successful candidate will be professionally responsible to the Medical Director and will report to the Clinical Head of Pathology Services to provide an effective and efficient cellular pathology service to the Medical Specialists, General Practitioners and Dentists authorised by Health and Social Care to use the Pathology Services at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.

  • The department processes approximately 7500 requests a year. The majority of the specimens are skin, followed by gastrointestinal, gynaecology, urological and breast specimens. Large specimens are from the following surgical procedures: laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, breast surgery, upper and lower GI surgery (oesophagectomy, gastrectomy and colectomy), hysterectomy, orchidectomy, thyroidectomy, laryngectomy and cervical lymph node dissection for head and neck cancers. The Biomedical Scientists cut up small specimens including simple un-orientated skins and non-cancerous simple hysterectomies. The Department is training a Biomedical Scientist to acquire an IBMS Diploma in Expert Practice in Histological Dissection which will free up Consultant time.
