Sanctuary Criminal Justice is currently looking for an experienced and dedicated Band 6 Community Psychiatric Nurse to work full-time within a Liaison and Diversion - Custody Team based in Oldbury, West Bromwich. The ideal candidate will possess highly developed specialist knowledge of mental health nursing and be registered with the NMC.

The pay rate for this locum Community Psychiatric Nurse job is from £26 per hour (LTD Company Equivalent) and is an initial 3-month contract.

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Based on the NHS England Liaison and Diversion Operating Model the post holder will be responsible for:
  • Working across the Black Country Liaison and Diversion Service to attend police custody suites crown and possibly magistrates' courts to provide identification, secondary screening and assessments.
  • Providing clinical advice and identify robust care pathways, for individuals where, for example, a potential mental health, substance misuse and or learning disability need has been identified.
  • Working with all ages groups to provide the police and court with written information pertaining to the individual in a timely fashion to inform disposal.
  • Working closely and build links with all referring agencies within the custody suite, court and probation acting as a single point of contact for health.
  • Addressing the court in person when necessary in order to advise the court in the disposal, and care pathway of a particular case.
  • Referring to the appropriate team within Black Country Partnership NHS Foundation Trust/Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, community mental health teams.
  • Referring to the appropriate team Learning Disability and/or substance misuse providers within Dudley, Walsall, Sandwell, and Wolverhampton.
  • Make recommendations to the Crown Prosecution Service, National Probation Staff or other court staff , regarding recommendations via court reports or verbally.
  • Providing support, education and advice to professionals across all Criminal Justice settings.
  • Developing a strong working knowledge of the Mental Health Act in relation to the police, courts and the criminal justice system.
  • Where diversion is indicated, to facilitate mental health act assessments at the police station or court in conjunction with the Black Country Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust assessment teams.
  • Referring to the prison in reach teams where custody is indicated ensuring appropriate information is received along the care pathway.
  • Communicating clearly with a diverse and vulnerable group of service users across all ages and able to address the specific needs of disadvantaged groups including women, people from black and minority ethnic communities, veterans and older people.
  • Working autonomously and as part of a broader team with the ability to organise and manage own time according to delegated workload.

Requirements of the Community Psychiatric Nurse:

  • Degree or equivalent in nursing
  • Current NMC registration
  • Significant experience as a Prison Nurse
