Are you ready for registration renewal with the HCPC?

Tagged In:  Career Advice, CPD, HCPC
For the first time, social workers in England are preparing to renew their registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

The renewal process opens on 1 September and closes on 30 November, by which point social workers must have renewed their registration to legally continue practising social work.

Unlike the previous hours system operated by the General Social Care Council (GSCC), the HCPC is more focused on quality and outcomes; requiring social workers to maintain a comprehensive record of any Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities that are undertaken and demonstrate how they have led to effective practice.

What counts as CPD activity?

Your CPD profile can include anything, as long as you can justify why it is beneficial to your work or service users.

CPD activities can include:
Work-based learning. E.g. considering feedback from service users or job shadowing.
Professional activity. E.g. being a member of a specialist interest group or giving presentations, lecturing or teaching.
Formal education. E.g. attending courses, carrying out research or distance learning.
Self-directed learning. E.g. reading articles and reviewing books.
Other. E.g. voluntary work.

Take a look at Sanctuary Training’s ‘Top Ten Tips’ on building your CPD profile.

2.5% of social workers to be randomly selected for audit

All practitioners must make sure that their CPD profile is up-to-date, as the HCPC will be auditing 2.5% of all social workers to check that standards are being met.

Find out more about the process for those whose CPD records are selected for audit in our exclusive interview with Robert Templeton, Council member of the HCPC, in Sanctuary Social Work News magazine

Live discussion: 'Meeting your CPD requirements', 19 August

Sanctuary is inviting all social workers to join its exclusive online chat, taking place on Tuesday 19 August from 7pm to 8pm. The event will be supported by a panel of experts, including HCPC council member Robert Templeton, who will answer your questions on putting your CPD profile together, what examples to include and how to relate these back to practice.

The discussion will also offer you the opportunity to share best practice ideas and assist in researching ways to develop your CPD. This could allow you to count the live discussion as a CPD activity in itself!
