An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen to undertake a six month contract working on the Falkland Islands.

The client is seeking an experienced social worker (3 years PQ) who is willing to commit to living and working on the island for at least 6 months. Although the focus of the work will be with the adult’s client group, candidates with generic experience will be welcomed as the caseload is mixed.

The Islands

The Falkland Islands are in the South Atlantic Ocean, located more than 250 nautical miles east of the coast of mainland South America. The archipelago comprises East Falkland, West Falkland, and 776 smaller islands. Stanley, the capital and only city, is on East Falkland. The islands are a self-governing British Overseas Territory, with the United Kingdom guaranteeing good government and taking responsibility for their defence and foreign affairs.

The islands are a very quiet place, not suited to those who enjoy an urban or commercialised lifestyle, however if you are one for natural beauty and the possibility of bumping into a penguin whilst going about your daily business, this could be for you!

Initial 6 month contract

A commitment of at least 6 months is required by the client. Subject to review, the contract could be extended.

Pay rate up to £35 per hour depending on experience

This is the maximum amount that will be paid per hour and is a LTD company pay rate. Unfortunately, any requests for a higher rate will not be considered.

Accommodation

There is accommodation available in the form of a house attached to the hospital; this would be shared with the locum GP. This would be at a cost of £98 per week to the candidate. There is a hotel in Stanley if preferred but this would be at the candidates own arrangement.

Flights

Flights at the beginning and end of the 6 month period will be paid for. It may be possible to negotiate a week’s leave in the middle of the contract however flights will have to be paid for by the candidate. Flights are from RAF Brize Norton and take approximately 18 hours.

Other

The successful candidate will be required to have a satisfactory medical. They will also be required to have a dental fitness letter, confirming that they have good dental health and there is no work outstanding. The costs of the examinations will be paid for by the Falkland Islands Government however if the is any dental treatment required, the candidate will have to pay for this themselves. A work permit will not be issued until the criteria have been met.
